Social Responsibility

Our two sites, at Laverton and Maroota, are part of our protein recovery process to assist in the ensuring a positive environmental performance across all areas of our business.

CSF Proteins is not only a processor of animal co-products to produce a range of poultry and fish meal and oil products, it is also a recycler of water and plant waste.

The Maroota site has two covered anaerobic ponds and a series of cooling ponds. The ponding system not only produces biogas, but treats water to a reusable standard. Thus, there is no discharge of waste water or sludge from the site and no water is brought in. The recycled waste water is used as condenser cooling water and for wash down. Boiler water and water for domestic use is supplied from on-site bores and rainwater tanks.

The biogas system

The biogas system includes two covered anaerobic ponds for digestion of high biological oxygen demand (BOD) wastewater from the rendering plant as well as flare and stainless steel pipe connection to the two boilers. Wastewater and sludge enters the two ponds from the plant (either in series or parallel). The ponds are also fed with DAF waste from raw material suppliers.

Anaerobic treated waste water overflows into an adjacent aerobic pond equipped with mechanical aerators from where it overflows into a buffer pond where it mixes with plant cooling water and is recycled back into the plant. This water recycling process takes approximately 45 days. Pipes collect gas from under the covers and deliver it to the duty/standby blowers and flare system. Piped natural gas and an ignition system provide a pilot flame to the flare. A system of control valves and sensors regulate the under-cover gas pressure.

There are non-return and isolation valves in the gas pipes feeding into the boilers. Maintenance is important, however given the lower calorific value of biogas it is of lower hazard compared to natural gas.

Workplace Gender Equality Agency Report

The introduction of the Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012 (WGE Act) in late 2012 places an increased requirement on organisations to promote and improve gender equality and outcomes for both women and men in the workplace.

As part of these legislative reforms, private sector organisations with more than 100 employees are required to lodge an Annual Report with the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) detailing the gender composition of its workforce by 31 May 2013. These reports must also be made available to employees, shareholders and relevant employee organisations so that they have an opportunity to comment on the information.

Ridley Corporation Limited lodged its WGEA Annual Report on 29 May 2013, and is available here.

VIC Odour Management Plan

Laverton process building is under negative pressure and it is serviced by one of the largest biofilters in Australia which draws odorous air from the building for treatment.
